Comment:I received Peter Pond's pistol on consignment in my shop. I deal in antique and collectible firearms and received this old flintlock that has been converted to percussion. It is inscribed on top of the barrel 'Peter Pond His Pistol'. It also has the NWS logo and Albany on the side plate. If you are interested to know more about it please email me.

His father was a stone mason, although I don't know his name. I'm told he built a catholic church somewhere up there, and our roots are German/Prussian.

I am curious how he came to this small Canadian town, although there were Nutting's in a northern county of this province. I also note his daughter Olive Lee Nutting married Romeyn Berry, both of the uSA, in Lunenburg Coutny 1908. I am curious if anyone knows what brought him to this area, and if there are many surviving ancestors either here or in the US.

Comment:I do historical research as a hobby. Peter Pond was instrumental in altering the French, English and American Colonies as to the breadth of North America. He had a lengthy conversation with Francois Michaux who went on to present Thomas Jefferson at Philadelphia with a contract to go west in 1785 for American interests. This same contract Thomas Jefferson used for Lewis and Clark in 1804.

Comment:My father, a UEL (Loyalist) from New Brunswick always told us as children that we shared common ancestors with Peter Pond. Some the Massachusetts Bay Colony Ponds remained in New England, some moved north to Canada after the revolutionary War, and others migrated west as pioneers, explorers, adventurers etc. A restless crowd indeed, since the name Pond is not common but widespread across the continent. Peter Pond's family left Massachusetts at the same time as other families who decided that the freedoms they had sought as pilgrims were not to be realized in the original colony. A bunch of free-thinking trouble makers I guess. We are working on our family tree trying to solve the family connection of John Pond b 1750 approx in likely PA, Connecticut with ties to Abel (Able) Pond. Any hints would be much appreciated. Thanks for the website. Peter Pond was a real adventurer. It's too bad his contributions have not been better recognized. Maybe if the Ponds could stay put in one part of t

Comment:This is an interesting accounting of Peter Pond, who was unknown to me until this very moment. I wanted to point out, however, that your statement that "Pres. Thomas Jefferson read the Mackenzie book, decided USA should have a presence out there before the British got much further, and launched Lewis and Clark" was definitely a factor, but Jefferson had a predisposition to explore the Missouri River region, and had instigated three plans to do so beginning shortly following the Revolutionary War. These early plans are conveniently discussed in Ch. 6 of Stephen Ambrose's book "Undaunted Courage." This age of discovery was indeed an exciting period in the expansion of the United States. Your website is splendid!
