Comments:The Ojibwa Birch Bark Canoe was instrumental in the opening up of much of North America. A unidirectional craft built of sheets of birch bark laid up like the scales of a fish, sewn together with roots & sealed with sap. To help distinguish between front and back the builder would draw an animal like a rabbit smoking a pipe chased by a lynx in the back. The rabbit represented the people & the lynx their enemies. When Etienne Brule was doing reconnaissance work for Samuel de Champlain he discovered the Minong Mine, Isle Royal 1617 - 1622. There was already a trade route system in North America and the copper was being worked in places like Winnipeg, Manitoba Chicago, Il. & St. Louis, Mo. he may even have visited these places during the winter when the tribes left Isle Royale for the wintering grounds. Some of the better known Saddle Points like The Chicago Portage & Grand Portage were well used even before European Exploration in North America other like Methye Portage were little m

Comments:Baptiste Bisson (Buisson) born La Pointe, Wisconsin traveled to Grande Portage with his uncle Louis Bisson (Buisson) Fur Trader from Peoria, Illinois. His son by the same name was born in Alberta during his return from Bella Coola, BC in 1794. Many first born were named after their father by early settlers. Example: Jean Guyon du Buisson Senior Stone Mason & Jean du Guyon Buisson junior Royal Surveyor Quebec City 1619. This practice complicates finding facts about early explorers that are transient in nature to begin with Metis Time Line may help with this. Having no sign posts in the wilds the voyageurs often dedicated Lob Sticks (Lop Sticks, May Poles) to them in order to mark especially important places. Lob Stick River, Alberta was such a place Methye Portage were Peter Pond could check his map and verify the position with his sextant. This would also give the voyageur a chance to stretch their legs and toast the boss. Hope this is of some help Bill.. Regards, Patrick

I am curious how he came to this small Canadian town, although there were Nutting's in a northern county of this province. I also note his daughter Olive Lee Nutting married Romeyn Berry, both of the uSA, in Lunenburg Coutny 1908. I am curious if anyone knows what brought him to this area, and if there are many surviving ancestors either here or in the US.

Comments:I do historical research as a hobby. Peter Pond was instrumental in altering the French, English and American Colonies as to the breadth of North America. He had a lengthy conversation with Francois Michaux who went on to present Thomas Jefferson at Philadelphia with a contract to go west in 1785 for American interests. This same contract Thomas Jefferson used for Lewis and Clark in 1804.

Some the Massachusetts Bay Colony Ponds remained in New England, some moved north to Canada after the revolutionary War, and others migrated west as pioneers, explorers, adventurers etc. A restless crowd indeed, since the name Pond is not common but widespread across the continent. Peter Pond's family left Massachusetts at the same time as other families who decided that the freedoms they had sought as pilgrims were not to be realized in the original colony. A bunch of free-thinking trouble makers I guess. We are working on our family tree trying to solve the family connection of John Pond b 1750 approx in likely PA, Connecticut with ties to Abel (Able) Pond. Any hints would be much appreciated. Thanks for the website. Peter Pond was a real adventurer. It's too bad his contributions have not been better recognized. Maybe if the Ponds could stay put in one part of t

Comments:This is an interesting accounting of Peter Pond, who was unknown to me until this very moment. I wanted to point out, however, that your statement that "Pres. Thomas Jefferson read the Mackenzie book, decided USA should have a presence out there before the British got much further, and launched Lewis and Clark" was definitely a factor, but Jefferson had a predisposition to explore the Missouri River region, and had instigated three plans to do so beginning shortly following the Revolutionary War. These early plans are conveniently discussed in Ch. 6 of Stephen Ambrose's book "Undaunted Courage." This age of discovery was indeed an exciting period in the expansion of the United States. Your website is splendid!
